Bridging La Frontera – Robert Seltzer

Bridging La Frontera – Welcoming El Paso authors to the Big Bend area
Sponsored by Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library
Made possible by a grant from Humanities Texas

Robert Seltzer is a native of El Paso, TX. He earned a journalism degree from UTEP and worked for newspapers such as the Houston Chronical, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the San Antonio-Express-News, where he is currently the public editor. He has won state and national awards for his news, feature, and sports reporting.

In Amado Muro and Me, ten-year-old Robert Seltzer discovers that his father, Chester, actually leads two lives – one as a newspaperman and father who somehow always knows what his son is thinking; the other as Amado Muro, a passionate and gifted writer whose pseudonym is adopted from the name of his Mexican immigrant wife. Chester was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but in Amado Muro’s stories, he channels an intense love of Mexican culture to create deep, strong roots in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Thursday, Jan 19, 2017
Private reception with the author for FJDCL members at 6 pm in the Hotel Limpia.
Free public discussion and book-signing at 7 pm at the library.

Bridging La Frontera – Daniel Chacón

Please join Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library for the first in our three-part series, “Bridging La Frontera” featuring El Paso author Daniel Chacón on Thursday, October 20 at the JDC Library in Fort Davis.

Daniel Chacón is an award-winning author who has written four works of fiction and is the first speaker in our series about life on both sides of the border.

His most recent work, Hotel Juarez, is a collection of short stories that contains images which come to life in the readers’ minds: “a girl remembers her father who taught her to love books and libraries. A book can whisper at you, call you from the shelves. Sometimes a book can find you. Seek you out and ask you to come and play…”

Hotel Juarez received the 2014 Pen Oakland Award for Literary Excellence and 2013 Tejas NACCS Award for Best Fiction.

Chacón’s earlier works include Chicano Chicanery and Unending Rooms followed by And the Shadows Took Him. He also collaborated on The Last Supper of Chicano Heros, a compilation of selected works of José Antonio Burciaga.

Currently a professor of creative writing at the University of Texas at El Paso, Chacón’s newest novel, D, will be published in 2017.

The event will start at 6 p.m. with a “Members Only” wine and cheese reception for the author at the Hotel Limpia veranda. Purchase a membership at the door to attend the reception – $10/individual and $15/family.

The free, public program begins at 7 p.m. at the Jeff Davis County Library in Fort Davis where Daniel Chacón will discuss the process and art of writing.

Chacón’s books will be available for purchase and signing. For further details, contact the library at (432) 426-3802.

“Bridging La Frontera” series is made possible by a grant from Humanities Texas with generous local support from Big Bend Coffee Roasters and Fort Davis State Bank.

Changes at the Ft. Davis Library

As the community says goodbye to retiring County Librarian Toi Fisher, the Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library wish her well and thank her for her service in building the library we have today.

We also want to let the community know that we will be fully assisting the interim librarian with volunteer staffing to keep the library staffed as many full days as possible until some permanent choices are made. We are working closely with the County and the existing staff as we move forward with this fresh start.

Many exciting changes are coming in the way of programs, activities, events, and new offerings. Everyone’s support is appreciated during the transition and suggestions are more than welcome for the future of this heart of the community! You can contact us at

In the meantime, let’s celebrate FJDCL’s 14 years of service to the Ft. Davis and Valentine libraries, the Ft. Davis After School Program, and our entire community!
