The Jeff Davis County Library is located in the historic W. Keesey – Union Mercantile Building East of Memorial Square. The original general store began in 1873 and was expanded in 1906 with the current building being constructed around the main section of the earlier store. This rambling structure resembling the “Alamo style” of architecture evolved from a grocery into the hardware store, lumber yard, gun and ammunition market, as well as the social center and credit union for the area. Jeff Davis County purchased the mercantile from the Donald Judd estate in 1994. After careful historical preservation and restoration, it opened as the library at the end of 1999.

The Kay Johnson Public Library was dedicated on Saturday, October 10, 2009. It’s the first library in Valentine, TX. Karen Johnson built the library as a tribute to her late mother, Kay Johnson, a Valentine area rancher who loved reading and constantly stressed the power of literacy to her own children. Valentine residents applauded the new library and its adjacent playground as a welcome addition to the town.
“We really wanted to do something for the kids in Valentine and for the community,” Karen Johnson said. “We decided this would be the perfect thing.”
