The Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library promotes and supports the vital role of the
Jeff Davis County Library (JDC Library) through literary events, student scholarships,
and community engagement.
The Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library (FJDCL) began in the early 1990s when the Library was housed in the historic “Old Jail” in Fort Davis. FJDCL started as a small fund-raising group that sold canvas book bags, sponsored a July 4th barbeque, and conducted annual book sales.
By the year 2000, with the Library’s move to the larger historic Mercantile Building, FJDCL evolved into an active and vital membership group offering public programs, promoting volunteerism at the library, and contributing to the improvement of the Jeff Davis County Library.
In 2005, Nancy Robinson, then president of the organization, began a scholarship program for Jeff Davis County graduating seniors. That year, one $1,000 scholarship was awarded. Since then, two $1,000 scholarships have been awarded yearly.
The Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library became a 501( c) (3) non-profit organization in 2009.
Planning for the Library Terrace began in 2010, and construction will be completed in 2014, under the leadership of Cyndee Barnes.
What We Do:
FJDCL presents fun events open to the community including the “Midsummer Night’s Dream Garden Party,” poetry readings, book signings, educational programs, and an annual holiday chamber music concert. FJDCL collaborates with the Sul Ross Theatre Program to offer the delightful Shakespearean themed event. Local and visiting poets and authors contribute to other programs.
FJDCL is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning through annual scholarship awards to graduating seniors in Jeff Davis County. Graduates may apply their scholarship to their chosen educational path.
